St Louis, MO - Looking for something a little different this weekend? Well, the popular folk music group The Tannahill Weavers will headline the sixth annual St. Louis Scottish Games & Cultural Festival, scheduled for October 6 and 7 in the city's Forest Park.

Described by the New York Times as "an especially eloquent mixture of the old and the new," The Tannahill Weavers play traditional, yet dynamic, Celtic music. Born of a session in Paisley, Scotland, and named for the town's historic weaving industry and the local poet laureate, Robert Tannahill, the group consists of five musician-singers: Roy Gullane (guitar and lead vocals), John Martin (fiddle, cello, viola and vocals), Phil Smillie (flute, whistles, bodhran and vocals), Les Wilson (bouzouki, guitar, keyboards, bass pedals and vocals), and Colin Melville (highland bagpipes, Scottish small pipes and whistles).

The Boston Globe said The Tannahill Weavers "play acoustic instruments, but the atmosphere at their shows is electric. They can summon rock 'n roll intensity or haunting introspection." In addition to performing in Scotland, England and Wales, the Weavers have staged concerts in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Canada and the United States.

The nonprofit, sixth annual St. Louis Scottish Games & Cultural Festival will kick off Friday evening, October 6, in Forest Park with a torchlight ceremony and a calling of the Scottish clans, followed by a concert by The Tannahill Weavers. Events on Saturday, October 7, will include ancient Scottish athletic contests, bagpipe and Highland dance competitions, musical and other performing artists, Scottish history and storytelling, Scottish foods and crafts, sheepdog herding demonstrations, exhibits of Highland cattle, birds of prey, a British car show, and several children's activities.
